Frequently Asked Questions
How do I join HBDA?
To become a regular member, first find the chapter that you would like to join. You can start by clicking the Chapters link that leads you to information about the various chapters such as where and when the chapter meets and what dances will be taught. When you've found your chapter, note the location, the time, and the day of the week when it meets. Next, click on the Calendar link and find the next registration dates. The registration dates usually correspond to the day of the week when your chapter meets. At that day and time, grab your dance partner and your dance shoes and head for the meeting place.
Do I need a partner to take classes?
HBDA does not rotate dance partners for lessons like many other organizations do. Consequently, it would be better to have a steady dance partner for the lessons. If it comes to the registration date and you have failed to convince your potential dance partner on the merits of ballroom dance, come by yourself. Often, there are others who do not have a partner that you can be matched with.
How long are the lessons?
Most chapters teach three lessons per night. The first two lessons are typically beginning lessons and the third is typically an intermediate lesson. Most chapters start their lessons at 7:00 PM. Each lesson is typically 40 minutes with breaks between lessons. Additionally, announcements usually follow the first lesson.
How much do lessons cost?
There is an annual membership fee of $10.00. Each quarter there is a student card fee of $16.00. The student card fee includes two dance lessons plus free admission to the Ohana dances at the Palladium. Additional dance lessons are $8.00 per course.
What should I wear to class?
Appropriate attire should be worn at chapter classes and HBDA events. We ask that you not wear slippers, tank tops, shorts or rubber slippers to class or to any HBDA event.
