NEW STUFF for Beta Chapter
HAPPY BIRTHDAY EVERYONE!
L-R:  Instructor Paul Lee, Beta Members Baldwin & Sally Miyake, Beta President Perfecto Cortez
June 14th, 2010 - End of 1st Quarter Potluck Night
Beta Chapter celebrated the end of its 1st quarter program with a delicious potluck dinner.  The food was
provided by all that attended.  The chapter members had just finished learning the International Tango and
International Rumba during the 1st quarter which were taught by Instructors Ron & Jan Matsuura.  The
instructors were recognized and thanked for their expertise in teaching and their commitments in helping
members learn the different dances.
All Beta Chapter members whose birthdays fell in the months that made up the 1st quarter (Apr, May, Jun)
were also recognized
April 9, 2010     In Memory of John Riley, former Beta Chapter President
This was a very sad day for Beta Chapter in that the chapter unexpectedly lost its long
standing President, John Riley.  Everyone extends their condolences to his family.  The loss
was so sudden that it took everyone by surprise - particularly those that had classes and
coffee with him only two days earlier.  It was certainly unfortunate, but many of his friends
and chapter members already had scheduled trips to various parts of the world at that very
same time and therefore could not be with his family for his funeral services.  The Monday
classes for Beta was cancelled by the Dance Director, Ben Agbayani, on the date of the
services though to enable the chapter members to attend.  Beta Chapter will certainly miss
him and his participation at the various chapter activities.
The school's principal was a guest at the potluck dinner.  After dinner, he
thanked the chapter for volunteering to help the students in the reading
program, for helping to clean the school facilities, and for donating school supplies
that the students used in their pursuit of learning.  He explained the significance
and importance of the volunteer help and the donations of supplies that the school
got from the chapter.
July 6th, 2010 - Janey Wong to be recognized at the 51st Anniversary Ball.
Janey Wong who always assists Paul Lee in teaching their classes will be receiving the Dance Director's
Award at the 51st Anniversary Ball in appreciation of and as a "thank you" for over twenty (20) years of
teaching.  Together with Paul, they taught the International Style of ballroom dancing to members of the
Hawaii Ballroom Dance Association.

In a retirement letter sent to Janey, effective March 31, 2010 and dated July 6, 2010, Dance Director Ben
Agbayani and Associate Dance Director Faith Agbayani also thanked her for taking the minutes at the HBDA
Council and the Dance Director's meetings and for her invaluable support towards the goals and mission of
the Hawaii Ballroom Dance Association.

Janey and Paul last taught at Beta Chapter two quarters ago.  Beta Chapter wishes her well and much
happiness as she embarks in her retirement.  We also wish her many rounds of fun golf and the enjoyable
trips that are yet to come.  Their classes in the various international ballroom dances will certainly be missed.
Beta Chapter to reschedule classes -  The Manana Elementary School cafeteria will be closed
July 19 thru July 23, 2010 for annual maintenance.  There will be a one week extension to the
class schedule to make up for this closure.  More information about the extension will be
forthcoming.

Collection of Box Tops to support the school. - Members of Beta Chapter are encouraged to collect
box tops that have the label "Education" written on it.  Such box tops would be from cereal boxes, zip lock
bag boxes, etc.  The members are asked to check the tops of all boxes that they get from the stores and/or
the supermarkets for such labeling and cut those tops that have the "Education" label on it.  The collected
box tops will be given to the school and they in turn would have the box tops converted to cash that they can
then use to buy supplies, etc.  There will be a collection box at the registration table at the entry on class
nights that will be available for members to deposit their box tops in.  All box tops collected will definitely be
appreciated.  Let's all help the school on this effort - this is one time where the old axiom "the more the
better" would work to the school's benefit.
Window Washing at Manana School's Cafeteria - July 30, 2010 (Saturday)
HELP NEEDED!  Beta Chapter needs volunteers to help with the washing of windows and screens at the
cafeteria on July 31, 2010 (Saturday) at 10:00am.  The school's cafeteria is where our dance classes are
held and therefore we would also be helping to clean our "class room".  This is an annual activity and,
depending on the number of volunteers present, usually takes about an hour, more or less.  Being that this is
summer time and classes are not in session, it is a good time that the cafeteria gets its yearly "dressing up".
REMINDER - SCHOOL SUPPLIES NEEDED
Beta Chapter members are asked to help with school supplies for the needy students.  Supplies such as
folders, pencils, paper, erasers, rulers, etc will be appreciated.  All donations of school supplies are needed
by August 2, 2010.  There will be a box at the registration table to receive these supplies.  This is an annual
effort.  The school's principal, administrative staff, and teachers over the years have always expressed
their appreciation on the chapter's efforts in helping the needy students.  Let's keep this help ongoing since
there will always be students in need.
